    • The Downtown Boxing Club (DTBC) is a private non-profit corporation organized under IRS code 501 © (3). The purpose and mission of the DTBC is to promote the development of amateur boxing to young men and children as a sport; to enhance the necessary boxing skills to young men and children that they may compete in actual tournaments, and educate amateur boxers on physical fitness and health. Additionally, by its nature, boxing is one of the few positive activities “at-risk” youth will engage in. As such, it is a secondary purpose of the DTBC to provide a structured environment for young men to participate in athletics at a very minimal cost to them, understand the value of physical fitness and competition and the sense of self-worth gained from positive competition. It is the desire of the DTBC to provide a positive activity for young men who would otherwise be spending time on the streets. The allure of boxing to many of these young men is the matching of their ability with that of a competitor and the opportunity to advance to greater levels of achievement.

    • History

    • The Downtown Boxing Club was established in 1978 by Kenneth Wingo considered the Grandfather of Boxing in its current location at 306 S 24th Street in Omaha, Nebraska. Established as a way to develop amateur boxing as a sport in the city of Omaha, the Downtown Boxing Club serves young men and boys ages 10-30 regardless of race, religion, creed, national origin or ability to pay. The Downtown Boxing Club has produced numerous boxing champions throughout its existence including Golden Gloves Champions, Silver Gloves Champions, Midwest Champions, City Champions, and State Champions. Ray Basili and John Glatgakos came on board to the Downtown Boxing Club in 1985 and Incorporated it as a Non Profit Nebraska Corporation and helped it become self sufficient financially through State Approved Charitable Gaming.

    • Mission

    • The mission of the Downtown Boxing Club is to promote the development of amateur boxing in the city of Omaha as a safe, positive sport for young men; to enhance the necessary boxing skills of young men as they compete in actual tournaments on a local and national level, to promote the attitude of sportsmanship and fair play, and to encourage and educate amateur boxers of the value of physical fitness and good health habits.

    • Philosophy

    • The Downtown Boxing Club believes:
      • In providing positive athletic opportunities to any young man with the discipline and desire to learn.
      • In promoting boxing as a safe, healthy sport.
      • That athletic competition is a valuable, effective way to provide alternative activities to young men who would otherwise spend unsupervised time on the streets, possibly engaging in criminal activities.
      • In teaching safety and the rules of safe competition.
      • In proper physical conditioning as a way to prevent injury and prepare for practice and competition.
      • In teaching young men about the importance of a good diet and rest as a way to develop into a well prepared athlete.
      • That there is no place for illicit drug use by any athlete. By participating in boxing, it gives the athlete and “excuse” to stay away from drug use and strive for a healthy body and mind.
      • That athletics and athletic competition help young people develop mentally and physically and also enhances an athlete’s self image.
      • Boxing teaches discipline, coordination, balance, graceful movement, speed, agility, endurance, fear control, an acceptable channel for aggression, decision making, and how to handle a crisis situation.
